In addition to the GC taking quite a bit of time, I measured the following:

  GCC 2.96.2      GCC current CVS
  -----------     ----------------

  ~60 MB          ~160 MB            Nearly three times as much!
  
  real: 1.25.3    real: 2:36.8       Nearly twice as much!
  user: 1:20.5    user: 1:44.0 
  sys :    0.7    sys :   47.1       !!!

Ouch! :-(
