Line number question

The g++ front end 's preprocessor will merges line in function 
skip_escaped_newlines
,why not do it at c++ compiler?

look at these codes
int Myother;//line number  is 1
int My\
xyz=1;int i=2;

The line number of Declaration 'i' will be 2.but it's lineno in source file 
is 3.
