It is linked into libstdc++:

libstdc___la_LIBADD = \
        ../libmath/libmath.la @libio_la@ \
        ../libsupc++/libsupc++convenience.la \
        @libinst_wstring_la@

So if you use -lstdc++, you do not need -lsupc++.

But it is also provided separately for those folks that do not wish
to have a complete conforming library (embedded systems mostly) or
are using bits of c++ for supporting another language (eg java).
