Fastjar's Makefile:153: *** missing separator. Stop.

I was just trying to build gcc cvs sources 2000-12-17
about 17:08 +01:00 and hung on fastjar/Makefile while
doing a bootstrap-lean:

make[2]: Leaving directory
`/usr/local/src/objdir-gcc-2000-12-17-1708+0100/zlib'
make[2]: Entering directory
`/usr/local/src/objdir-gcc-2000-12-17-1708+0100/fastjar'
Makefile:153: *** missing separator.  Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory
`/usr/local/src/objdir-gcc-2000-12-17-1708+0100/fastjar'make[1]: ***
[all-fastjar] Error 2                                                 

Now, the Makefile looks pretty odd, starting at line 153, it's this:

TAR = gtar
=======
TAR = tar

Not to much understanding to me...

This was on a Red Hat Linux 6.2/Intel system up to date as
of today, i.e., 2000-12-17.

Any ideas?
