That was an unrelated issue. Alex Buell claimed that upgrading from
egcs to gcc 2.95 broke things; this thread is about upgrading from gcc
2.7 to gcc 2.8/egcs/2.95.

While there may be problems in all places, it does not help to confuse
them.
