Well, it built!
Now, using it still presents the old symptoms:
% c++ -g -c hello.C
cc1plus: warning: -g is only supported when using GAS on this processor,
cc1plus: warning: -g option disabled.
%

Er... I have lived so far under the assumption that as and gas were
aliases to one and the same binary.
Do you mean I was wrong?
Because, in fact, the "as" mentioned above _is_ a soft link to gas...
