EGCS: Recommended binutils & newlib

binutils is required to build egcs-1.1.2.  newlib is required for embbed
cross compiliers.

What is the recommended versions for binutils and newlib for egcs-1.1.2
?
Are binutils-2.9.1 (as found on ftp.gnu.org) and newlib-1.8.1 OK or are
there later versions/snapshots that are more suitable.  I couldn't find
this info on the egcs web page.

How can one download snapshots if required.  Is CVS required ?
