Hmm, might not be trivial in the code, and certainly would be more
painful to document than the current, fairly simple-minded option.
(Plus, we'd really need a new option to represent this intermediate
sort of emulation.)  Otherwise, that seems like a good idea.

I still haven't examined the -fstrict-aliasing stuff at all yet,
though it's in my backlog somewhere (under "performance", I think).
