(this build *required* gnu make--build with system make failed mysteriously)

anyway, both compilers are substantially easier to use when compiling free
software than the system compilers, so thanks a lot for all your effort--
i remember spending days installing gcc-2.7.2 and have been repeatedly
extremely pleased with egcs' ease of installation.
