Hello,
We are looking to hire a number of egcs/GCC compiler development
specialists
to further the development of our Java Enabled Microprocessor, the
PSC1000.
Background:
Patriot Scientific Corp. is a small, publicly funded, company in
southern
California (San Diego to be precise). We have ~20 employees, 2/3 of
which
are directly involved in the development of our flagship product, the
PSC1000 microprocessor.
The PSC1000 offers a unique architecture which is particularly well
suited
to embedded Java applications. The PSC1000 is a stack-based processor
with
8-bit instruction words and zero-length operands. 90% of the Java
bytecodes
map directly to PSC1000 instructions. There are two stacks: the local
register stack and the operand stack. The top of each stack resides
on-chip
with the ability to automatically spill and refill to/from memory.
Instructions are executed by pushing the operands on to the operand
stack and then executing the instruction. The result is left on the
stack.
This notation you may find familiar as it exactly models the JVM. Here
is an example of res = (4 + 5) * 6 in PSC1000 assembly language:
push _res ; where we will store the result
push 4
push 5
add ; adds 4 + 5, leave 9 on stack
push 6
mul ; multiply 9 * 6, leave 72 on stack
st [] ; store 72 at address pointed to by _res
You may notice the resemblence to how Java bytecodes are executed.
We have the PSC1000 running in silicon now @ 80Mhz. The core is
~18000 transistors (1 sq. mm) and executes C code at roughly the same
speed
as a 386-40Mhz processor (1.5 million transistors).
There is a new lower voltage, smaller die version in development. The
PSC1000a will be %50 smaller and operate at 150Mhz. A soft-core version
is also in development.
The Opportunity:
Up to this point most of the engineering has been focused on the
hardware.
We have a C development kit from Sierra Systems currently and are
looking
to move to egcs/GCC. This move would offer us a more standard platform
and
C++.
We are looking for two addidtional engineers to work on porting egcs
to cross-compile for the PSC1000 architecture. egcs is critical for
porting
off-the-shelf software to the platform such as VxWorks and PersonalJava.
This work would be contributed back to the free software community and
hopefully make it into the offical egcs release.
In addition to the two engineers mentioned we are also looking for a
good
number of additional developers to support the other software efforts
including the JVM, JIT, development tools, hardware support, etc.
Given your interest with egcs, I would think that these positions would
be
suited to your interests. If you think that this opportunity would be of
interest to you, please drop me line. I can be reached by email
erik@ptsc.com
or by telephone (619) 674-5000 ext. 237
We offer generous conpensation packages including stock options. We can
sponsor elegible applicants if necessary and will cover moving expenses.
It is also possible to work remotely if you'd rather live somewhere
else,
within the US or otherwise.
