egcs or gcc binaries on hpux 10.20 (help!)

Hello all,
I'm a long time operations admin and I just got assigned to support a research
scientist who will very likely make important advances in the use of data
mining and statistical analysis in toxicology. This is a very good thing since
it will prevent dangerous side effects in medicines and I feel personally
commited to getting this project up and running.
I got an HPUX binary from
http://hpux.csc.liv.ac.uk
which has been a relible source of depot type packages, but, alas, it was
broken. I tested it on a perl compile and got the "Whoa there!!" error.
So at this point, I am hoping to get an egcs binary, or lacking that, a gcc
binary that is tested in compiling egcs.
I actually documented the "prep" stuff; paths, env settings, the Makefile.
I even renamed hupx AS and LD for the time being.
I did a lot of other compiles, including LD, w/o problems- its just seems to be
the AS incomptibilities.
TIA *2,
===
