When I've used ghostscript to generate pdfs from LyX output, I
consistently found the pdf to be less than half the size of the .ps.gz.
Perhaps that was because I had a few pictures.

Agreed. Ghostscript has a habit of crashing with them as well as making
them ugly from time to time.
