Why does config.guess come up with such wacky stuff?

Certainly!  Or report an error if there is no known safe answer.  

This could at one time happen for certain versions of linux on the alpha and
powerpc, though we have mostly addressed those specific problems.  But it's 
probably safe to assume that similar problems with creep up again.
