One of the C++ changes installed on the branch is mis-behaving. I've already
ruled out the libio changes, but I haven't yet identified the problem C++
change.

One of the rather lame things about CVS is there is no way to say "update to
the branch state at time XYZ". That makes nailing this kind of thing down on
a branch hard -- enough that it might be worth tagging the release branch
nightly with a date tag to make tracking this stuff down on a branch easier.
