See, this is what the 'e' in egcs stands for :-)
Are you saying you didn't have to recompile between, say, gcc 2.1 and
gcc 2.7, when using C++? I'm pretty certain that the C++ ABI was
changed more than once in the history of g++.

1.0 was a major release (with four minors), and 1.1 is a major release
(with three minors).
