Successful compilation of egcs-1.1b on SGI Octane

I have compiled egcs-1.1b on my SGI Octane with
gcc-2.8.1 located in /usr/gnu/bin as the starte
compiler under IRIX 6.4. Output from config.guess
was :

kinases1 9% ../egcs-1.1b/config.guess
mips-sgi-irix6.4

Note that in doing this on my machine, it was
absolutely essential that /usr/gnu/bin be the
last item in PATH and that gmake be invoked as
/usr/freeware/bin/gmake so that /usr/freeware/bin
does not appear in PATH Otherwise the
make bootstrap would fail in stage 2 with
an attempt to compile and link a routine called
dummy.C I presume this is solely because of
my having something that interferes in these
directories and that all I did by using this
ordering was to force satisfaction with the
correct versions of what was being linked.

Sincerely,
