Need help with making cross compiler and fixincludes.

I am trying to build a cross compiler on a Solaris box to target a
m68k-coff setup. I am using egcs-1.1b. Here is what I did:

1. I built egcs native and installed. No problems.
2. I built binutils-2.9 No problems.
unpack the distribution
host=sparc-sun-solaris2.6
target=m68k-coff
prefix=something
newbin=$something/bin
mkdir something
mkdir build-binutils
cd build-binutils
../binutils-2.9/configure --host=$host --target=$target --prefix=$prefix -v
make 
make install

3. Now to build the egcs cross
mkdir build-egcs
cd build-egcs
PATH=$newbin:$PATH	# so it would find what it needed
# I also linked ar in $newbin to m68k-coff-ar. It seemed to like that.
make LANGUAGES="c c++"

Now things start to go sour.
It died in texinfo/lib trying to make makeinfo because it was getting the
ranlib for the target platform. I manually ran ranlib with the native one
in /usr/local/bin.

Now what's happening is that it is dying in a compile of muldi3 because it
can't find unistd.h and stdlib.h which are supposed to have been put there
by the fixincludes. The include directory in
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.6 doesn't have a copy either.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
