Does combine demonstrate a similar problem of not handling VOIDmode comparisons properly? No. In fact, one way to fix the loop problem is to make the code look more like the code in combine. However, that is a larger change than just accepting VOIDmode, so I didn't try that. I just mentioned it in a comment in my patch. Jim
