IMO-"Required Reading" -- "Recursive Make Considered Harmful"

This still-in-progress paper has many excellent points to make,
some of which I've tried to elucidate in the past.

It doesn't quite cover all my concerns for the whole `make' approach
(but I haven't looked at Aegis or Cook, products the author of
this paper has developed, which might) -- for example, it doesn't
solve the problem of too-little practical static checking -- but
it can't, really, while being about `make', and I do suspect that
switching to the approach he describes would likely mitigate those
other problems significantly.

Even people who don't want (or aren't able) to change how their
projects make use of `make' are likely to discover useful information
in this.

Enjoy!
