${UNAME_MACHINE} should do; I think cygwin32 reports the value it gets
from the operating system, which in general is correct (although I don't

Either of your proposals would be fine with me.  Those more knowledgeable
than I about the subtleties of the differences should argue which one it
shall be :-)
