Components to install on RedHat 5.0 ?

Hi alltogether,

I just switched a running RedHat Linux 4.2 system with the
egcs system to a freshly insalled RedHat Linux 5.0 system.

Now, I admit I am too stuck in work to dig myself down
into all the changes 5.0 brought to me, but I am assuming
I would like to continue developing with the new glibc2 now.

In order to compile the newest egcs snapshot, I did the 
following:

(1) out-of-the-box install of RedHat 5.0
(2) installed binutils-2.8.1.0.19.bin.tar.gz
(3) untar'd and compiled egcs-980115.tar.gz

so now I have 
gcc --version
egcs-2.91.04 980115 (gcc-2.8.0 release)

Is this thing now using the new glibc2 thing? I am not
so sure yet. I was wondering what the 
binutils-2.8.1.0.19-glibc.bin.tar.gz was good for, but
I assume that would help when using the gcc 2.7.2
to compile egcs with the glibc2 library? So what I
did was use gcc 2.7.2 with the old libc to compile
the new egcs?

Hmmm, I admit I am pretty clueless here, maybe someone can
give me a hint as to what exactly I did (and maybe what I 
*really* would want to do instead, if that wasn't right) :)

By the way, I understand egcs uses its own libstdc++,
what else would installing 

libg++-2.8.1-980119.tar.gz
libg++-2.8.0b6.6-2.8.1-980119.diff.gz

under /usr/local bring me?
