That error is due to using an old version of expect/dejagnu.  Install
a new version of the dejagnu package (see INSTALL/TEST for details).

I also had this problem when the wrong expect was being used...for
some reason if there is an expect in your path, it takes precedence
over the one built from dejagnu at an intermediate point in testing.
This is clearly a bug in the Makefiles somewhere, but I haven't yet
had a chance to look at it in detail.
