Well, I'd really prefer patches to fix whatever problem arises when
the gcc dir doesn't exist.  But since we really want to move towards
an integrated C++ compiler & runtime I guess it's OK to punt if the
compiler doesn't exist in the expected place.

I've installed your patch.
