egcs support for DBX 4.0 debug info (Solaris 2.6)

I've currently got egcs-2.90.29 980515 installed and found that it is unable to generate
debug symbols for use with DBX 4.0 under Solaris 2.6.. If I compile a plain C program
with either "-g", "-gstabs", or "-gstabs+", dbx claims that there is no debugging 
info.. 

Is this a known problem?  This is also true with regular old gcc-2.7.2.2..
