typedef vs. typename confusion

The amount of code that people are going to write is strictly greater
than the amount of code already written.  If people want to compile
old, unsupported code, they can do it with old compilers...  If a
piece of code is actively supported, then sooner or later the
maintainers will want to be able to compile it w/ egcs :-)
