Someone may have had the problem and already solved it... but I've had
some problems compiling the 980425 and 1.0.2 versions on either of my two
Alpha machines runnin RedHat Linux 5.0... Both of the machines have the
following info in /proc/cpuinfo:
cpu : Alpha
cpu model : EV56
cpu variation : 0
cpu revision : 0
cpu serial number : Linux_is_Great!
system type : EB164
system variation : SX164

The 19980425 snapshot ends with a problem compiling gcc/objc/hash.c about
not supporting the assembler .arch directive... The exact error is:

/usr/src/egcs-19980425/gcc/xgcc -B/usr/src/egcs-19980425/gcc/ -DIN_GCC
- -g -O2 -I./include -I. -I. -I./config \
- -c ./objc/hash.c -o objc/hash.o
/tmp/cca05291.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/cca05291.s:4: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: `.arch'
make[1]: *** [objc/hash.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/egcs-19980425/gcc'

The 1.0.2 release ends with a problem again in gcc with the error:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/egcs/gcc'
gperf -p -j1 -i 1 -g -o -t -G -N is_reserved_word -k1,3,$ \
   ./c-parse.gperf >tmp-gperf.h
make[1]: *** [c-gperf.h] Error 139
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/egcs/gcc'

This is followed by a log entry in /var/log/message of:

<Date host> kernel: gperf: memory violation at pc=00000000
rp=15555a900f0 (bad address = 00000000)

I would greatly appreciate any assistance that you can provide in
trying to get this compiled as it has been suggested that this may solve
some other problems I have compiling other applications.
