malformed archive on alpha

Hi --

I am (and have been) trying to build CVS egcs on alpha-redhat-linux with
several versions of binutils. Using versions of binutils since ~2.8.1.0.25,
I have been seeing problems like this one with egcs+binutils-2.9:

gcc -g -O2  -o makeinfo  makeinfo.o multi.o ../lib/libtxi.a  -lz 
../lib/libtxi.a: could not read symbols: Malformed archive
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [makeinfo] Error 1

As I understand it, there are problems on alpha that require binutils
version >= 2.9, so I have a bit of a chicken and egg problem here.

Anyone else having this problem?
