970924 snapshot

I tried to build the 970924 snapshot and ,of course, got the same ranlib
error. I then made, as somebody suggested, a link to ranlib from
/usr/local/alpha-dec-osf2.0/bin  and this time it got to the  stage 3 build
before the make bootstrap died.  MY GOD! how much disk space is needed
for a complete bootstrap build?  I thought for sure 168MB would be
enough, but I was wrong.  The build stopped during the third stage
because of a full file system, which caused a few problems with
the email and quite a few complaints this morning, but that's ok
since I'm the sys admin ;)
