(Newbie) how to build/install libs ?

Hi. I've downloaded 970917, read most of the archive at cygnus, and
taken the plunge with

% cd egcs-970917
% ./configure --prefix=/home/chris/EGCS/local-970917 --local-prefix=/home/chris/EGCS/local-970917
% make all-gcc

Hope I didn't goof. This seems to build a compiler. well done folks. 

Now, I'm chiefly interested in g++, so please, what is the recommended
stanza to get streams, strings, and stl ?
FWIW, my box is recognized as a i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1.
