When you say out of date, what does that mean?  I did a make distclean
before ./configure and make bootstrap.  Out of curiosity I removed the
whole egcs directory and tried the make on a freshly unpacked
distribution and I got the same error:
 sh: /usr/local/alpha-dec-osf2.0/bin/ranlib: not found.  Of course
/usr/loca/alpha-dec-osf2.0/bin is not in my path, so I don't know how
configure came up with that one.  Anyway I'm going to give the new
snapshot a try and see what happens.

PS By the way, the I was able to build egcs core distribution  without any
problems.
