egcs picking up wrong specs

The problem I (and others) had with gcc picking up the newly created
specs file has reappeared with egcs in a similiar form.
egcs failed to compile a part of XFree 3.3.1 because the directory in
question had a subdirectory named specs. I checked all relevant
environment vars and none contained '.' . I then set GCC_EXEC_PREFIX and
called egcs to print out its search path and - lo and behold - the path
has the current directory in quite some places.
I haven't yet had time to look at the code to see where the problem is
(a complete build of X 6.3 does take some time on my 100 Mhz Pentium
Machine), but at least I now have a starting point and I'll investigate
further in the evening.
