gcc -V will only look in $prefix/lib/gcc-lib/$platform for versions,
so you can't use gcc -V to choose your compiler if you use different
prefixes.  You need to choose the path to select the compiler.

But this is no loss for the C++ user, since gcc -V can't work across
major releases (all the -V versions will look in the same place for
C++ headers and C++ libraries, and this will break unless the two
versions can share the same C++ library, which isn't true for gcc-2.7.2.x
vs egcs).
