Build automation

Please forgive me if this is a sensitive topic, but I've always found
Cygnus' autoconf scripts and build process to be a little baroque and
inflexible.  Are there any plans to rewrite egcs' configuration and
build in terms of automake 1.2, autoconf 2.12, and libtool 1.0?

I might consider volunteering to do this job if I knew the work would
be accepted into the egcs distribution.
