Building on SunOS - sparc-sun-sunos4.1.3_U1

I have tried to build egcs-970904 on my SunOS m/c but get the following fail 

collect2: ld returned 2 exit status
ld: Undefined symbol 
   _strtoul 
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `f771'
Current working directory /d322/kh/egcs-970904/gcc
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `f771'

I built egcc by following the README instructions:_

	configure
	make

The configure.status is

d322% cat con*.status
