To be totally safe, don't you also need to set --local-prefix ? (I do,
and it seems to work for me, or at least to do no harm).
I wish a considerate guru could take a few minutes off his very
precious time to craft a twenty-liner INSTALL_FOR_NEWBIES, giving the
recommended minimal hassle-free procedure for an experimental
installation (which among other things wouldn't collide with existing
packages, most specifically stock gcc). Wading into the current
INSTALL file is a pain, and you need a keen eye to spot *the*
significant target, i.e. bootstrap.
There are too many things I have still to master (such as how to run
the tests :-) that prevent me to write it myself. Any kind soul out
there ?
