Skunk GCC and GAS in Sco 5.0.2

Environment: i586-pc-sco3.2v5.0.2

I am successfully compiling the first part of GCC, but when the makefile switches to compiling with XGCC, it is failing with 

as: unrecognized option `-b'

I suspect that egcs is assuming that I am using the native assembler (which isn't on the system at all).  Instead I am using GAS.

I know that on the old GCC, you could find the system configs for that under config/i386 - Where would I find it under EGCS to try and work around it here?
