collect2 compiles C with g77 !

I know for a fact that there are scripts (makefiles) out there that
assume g++ is capable of taking the same switches that gcc understands
(i.e., g++ is essentially a synonym for gcc).  I had to do repairs to
those makefiles to get some packages to build recently.
