Bugs using -fPIC on linux (i86 RedHat 5.0)?

I try to take the output of the preprocess phase and cut it down farther
until I have a very small example which reproduces the problem.  Typically
lots of the types and prototypes in the header files are really unused and
can be removed from the preprocessed output.  Smaller problem cases are
usually easier to debug.
