I just built the latest linux kernel with egc-1.0 after modifying
the compile flags to add:

-O3 -funroll-loops -mpentium -march=pentium -malign-loops=0 -malign-jumps=0 
-malign-functions=0

I'd also like to try it without the -fno-strength-reduce flag (although
since it appears before the -O3, it may have been already turned off).

In any event, the build went through flawlessly and I've been up for about
an hour so far.
