I applied these patches egcs-971207:

    memory blowup:

    static members in templates:
        http://www.cygnus.com/ml/egcs-bugs/1997-Dec/0062.html

    static template members:
        http://www.cygnus.com/ml/egcs-bugs/1997-Dec/0241.html

and used '-static' on an Ultra running Solaris 2.5.  

Now everthing seems to compile, link and run again.
