Could you investigate why you see these failures on i686-pc-linux-gnu, and
I don't?  AFAIK none of the format checking tests should be failing on any
platform except for (a) systems where wchar_t is plain char (signed and
unsigned char are OK), since on such systems it doesn't seem possible to
distinguish wide and non-wide string literals; and (b) possibly (I don't
know) systems with non-8-bit char.
