I forgot to mention, there was another reason why I didn't work on it
immediately.  I have only one ppc machine, and it was tied up testing an
unrelated patch that fixed a typo in a patch that Richard Henderson
checked in 2 months ago.  That patch fixed a memory usage problem, and
also a latent aliasing bug, so it was an important problem to get
fixed.  It took me 16 hours (8 of them asleep) to do the testing needed
before I could check in that patch, and it was only after fixing that
problem that I could look at this latent ppc bootstrap problem.
