Failure to bootstrap for trunk on i686-pc-linux-gnu

This looks like my patch, but I don't understand what's going wrong, 
and it doesn't happen to me.  This file should have been built at this 
point, and I added rules into the toplevel Makefile to make sure that 
it was.
