 I've cut the testcase down to the following:
 
 template <class T> class inner {
 public:
     inner<T>() { }
 };
 
 template <class T> class parent {
 public:
   virtual parent<inner<T> >* f() ;
 };
 
 
 template <class T> class child: public parent<T> {
 public:
   parent<inner<T> >* f()
   {  return new child<inner<T> >; }
 };
 
 int main()
 {
     parent<int> x ;
     child<int> y ;
 
     return 0;
 }
 
 I'm having trouble with my GCC build, so I haven't tested it on a current 
 version yet.
