 well, it seems as thoug this problem has gone away, for me at least.
 
 i did a bootstrap/build of gcc 3.4 20030413 (experimental), posted the
 test suite results of *that* as
 http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-testresults/2003-04/msg00965.html. installed
 *that* gcc and used *that* gcc to bootstrap/build gcc cvs head right
 now. it passes the linker.c problem and is moving forward.
 
 So, I'd say close this PR...
