 I have not been able to reproduce your ICE with a recent Gcc3.0 snapshot
 (see http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html )
 Instead, from Codesourcery online compiler (20010501) I got:

 requires
         class-key, i.e. `friend class ttr_chief'
