 I had the same problem, and it was only because I used Winzip (Version
 8.0) instead
 of tar!
 
 What worked for me was:
 
 tar -xzvf gcc-3.0.tar.gz
 mkdir objdir
 cd objdir
 ../gcc-3.0/configure --enable-languages=c++
 make bootstrap
 make install
