I'm sorry to be dense, but can you point to the specific line?  In my
$GCC_BUILD/Makefile, the only mention of LD_LIBRARY_PATH is:

  RPATH_ENVVAR = LD_LIBRARY_PATH

...so that isn't setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but using it.
