Yeah, which works great for encouraging new comers that doing anything with gcc is hard.  They, by definition, don't have the muscle memory, and the documentation that describes which memory their muscles should have is hard to find, or non-existant.  I'd merely favor any approach to make their life easier, -g3, a gdb macro package, all inline functions, no macros...
