Noone screamed, so here's the version I'd like to submit.  I've updated
it after Richard's fntype changes, and as he suggested, put the fn code
in a union with the new fntype.

Tested on x86_64-linux-gnu (on a machine that can build 32-bit
multilibs) and arm-linux-gnueabi.  OK to install?
